ABA Programs

Applied behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific based practice that focuses on explaining, predicting, and changing behaviors. ABA seeks to improve socially meaningful behaviors. Socially meaningful behaviors include, but are not limited to, greeting others with eye contact, sustaining conversation, and shaking another’s hand when meeting them for the first time. Greenwich Education and Prep’s ABA therapists focus their teaching on the needs and skills of each individual client.

After assessing students to determine what behaviors they can perform and what skills they are missing, our ABA therapist tailors instruction to meet the needs of each individual. ABA practitioners draw on the principles of behavior to determine the appropriate research-based tactics to change each individual student’s behavior. Positive reinforcement is used in multiple forms to replace inappropriate behaviors with appropriate behaviors and maintain those that are already appropriate. Using advanced data collection and graphs, we track and monitor each student’s progress. Additionally, our ABA therapists analyze graphs on a regular basis to insure that their student is learning optimally.

Where can Applied Behavior Analysis be used?

ABA can be used in a clinical setting, a school setting, a home setting, or even a work environment.

Who can benefit from Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy?

ABA is famous for being one of many therapies offered to individuals diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). What is unique about ABA as compared with other therapies, is that it has been demonstrated scientifically to be the most effective treatment for individuals diagnosed with ASD (there are over 550 published articles supporting this). Outside of ASD, ABA has been found to be effective for other individuals diagnosed with disabilities and current research supports its use on typically developing individuals.

What types of skills can be taught with Applied Behavior Analysis?

ABA has been used to teach a wide range of skills. To name a few, ABA has successfully taught play skills, social skills, academic skills, and organizational skills. What is most important to the ABA therapist, however, is their client and the needs of their client. Therefore, the skills most likely to be taught by an ABA therapist are those that the client needs help on, or is missing.

Why does Applied Behavior Analysis work?

There is no single answer to this question other than scientific research has shown it to be successful. However, from a non-practitioner perspective, some of the key tools used by a behavior analyst include positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviors and being contingent, or following through with what you say you will do 100% of the time.
