Oxford University comes to Greenwich!
Great opportunity for students aged 16-18.


Two week seminar (June 28, 2010 – July 9, 2010)

 

Oxford University has existed as a seat of learning since the eleventh century and the caliber and reputation of its academics is world renowned.

We are excited to announce our partnership with The Oxford Summer Course (OSC). This program offers excellent college preparatory classes and is another way to enhance your child's resume/college application. A team of instructors, each of whom has studied at Oxford, will give students insight into the prestigious learning methods of their University. Students will study a range of engaging and thought-provoking topics that are designed to emphasize essential academic skills. This seminar is geared toward students between the ages of sixteen and eighteen.

College Preparation

   
   

Classes include:

College Application & Essay Writing :
Is your child nervous about the college application process? This class will demystify the college application process, and most importantly, give your child the tools to assemble his/her best application. Topics will include: selecting colleges that are the right fit;  reviewing the entire application process; finding your child's voice so that they stand out among a large applicant pool; participating in mock interviews; brainstorming; essay writing; and editing.

Standardized Test Preparation:
Your child will learn and adopt the strategies and skills to perform at his/her fullest potential on standardized tests. We offer one-on-one instruction as well as small group classes to maximize your child's ability to perform well on the test.

College Essay Writing (entering grades 11-12)
Students will work in a small group setting to brainstorm, write, and edit their college essay. Students will use techniques that will enable them to stand out in the competitive applicant pool. Our creative writing exercises will help students discover their unique strengths and help them to confidently present themselves to colleges.

Writing

 

Your child will explore and practice various literary writing styles in these essential courses.  Classes will teach the six basic traits of excellent writing: voice, organization, sentence structure, fluency, grammar and punctuation, as well as critical thinking skills.

Classes are flexible in size and customizable based on need.

 

Classes include:

Writer's Workshop
This workshop will focus on the basics of grammar, fluency, and style, in addition to the various forms of writing, which include: persuasive essays, creative short stories,  editorials, and daily journaling. Students may sign up on an as-needed basis, or they may sign up for a week-long or month-long session.

Creative Writing Club
Students will revise their favorite pieces, get ideas from peers, and experiment with writing in different genres under the guidance of a writing mentor. Summer members will also be invited to participate in naming the club and publishing a summer literary magazine.

Our math program offers refresher and enrichment courses to prepare for the upcoming school year.  Our accreditation also allows students to repeat and/or complete courses for full credit with school approval. One-on-one sessions are available along with small group classes.

Foreign Languages

 

Study a new language or take a refresher course this summer! Our language enrichment courses will prepare students for the upcoming school year. They can also increase the chances of placing in a higher language class in September. Classes are offered in French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish for students at all levels of fluency.  Our individualized attention supports every student's learning style. Our teachers use creative ways to enhance the learning process and improve student's language skills through music, art, reading, writing, and conversation. All of our instructors are fluent, some of whom are native speakers.

Study Skills & Organization

 

Help your child learn valuable skills for high school. Through discussion and self-analysis, students will be introduced to various effective study methods. High school classes will get students ready to tackle upper-level and AP classes that entail heavy workloads and independent study. Topics will include: planning ahead for projects and tests; practicing time management; studying effectively; supporting learning styles; and note taking.

Study Skills & Organization
Students enrolled in this weekly course will learn to organize their school materials, take exceptional notes, and practice study and test-taking strategies.  They will also design personal and academic goals for the upcoming school year. The plan they create in class will act as a guide to help individuals reach their personalized goals.

August Transition Courses
GEP's August transition courses are designed to prepare students to meet the demands of the coming school year.  In our Junior/Senior Workshop, students learn how to tackle advanced studies, handle a heavier workload, improve independent study skills, manage their time, and get ready for college.

Arts

 

Be creative this summer! Small group classes and one-on-one sessions are offered to students and adults of all ages! Learn and/or refine your artistic skills with our exceptional teachers.

 

 

Visual Arts

Our art department provides limitless opportunities for exploring the visual arts, from studio art and art history to theatrical design and photography. Explore the basics of 2- and 3-dimensional art, develop expertise, or prepare your portfolio. Specialized classes for students and adults are available based on interest, such as Pencils and Pastels, Watercolor and Acrylic, Cartooning and The Anatomy of Super Heroes, History of the Cos Cob Art Colony, Introduction to Set and Costume Design, Comparative Anatomy, Jewelry Making, Graffiti & Street Art, Figure Drawing, Digital Photography, Stop Motion Animation, Portrait Painting in Oil, and much more.

All classes are flexible in size and customizable based on interest and experience. Classes can be scheduled over several weeks or in the full or half day camp format.

 

Performing Arts

Making the Band
Is your child a musician? Has s/he ever wanted to make a band but didn't know where to start? In this workshop,  musicians will create original songs as a group. We will guide students through the process of establishing a strong band dynamic, composing music, writing lyrics, harmonizing, promoting your band, and recording. Practice on your own and invite your friends to an end-of-week concert!

Discover Shakespeare!
This class is geared to high school students and interested adults. Study the rich language of the Bard and discover how his writing style helps guide actors to speak the words in the way he intended them to be spoken. Learn about who he (or she!) was and why his works still resonate with audiences today. Students will study sonnets and scenes from plays, and will have the opportunity to perform a sonnet and monologue of their choosing.

Specialized Summer Programs

Summer Day Camp – Camp SummerBlast

Give your child an exciting and unforgettable summer in our small, inclusive day camp for students entering grades 4 – 6.  We've got the perfect balance of traditional camp activities, social and academic supports, and FUN!  Our six-week session runs from July 5th – August 13th, Monday through Friday, 9 – 1 pm.  Students with ADHD, LD, and Asperger's, as well as those with no disabilities, will benefit from our small group sizes, individualized attention, and focus on building social skills.  Engaging recreational activities include: sports, arts and crafts, cooking, and much, much more!  Field trips every Friday!

JumpStart

Give your child a jumpstart on the upcoming school year!  Your child will review fundamental skills taught in their previous grade to prevent summer regression, and/or get a sneak preview of concepts that will be covered in their next grade.  Program runs from the end of July through late August.  Student schedules and plans of study (one subject or multiple subjects) are individualized based on each student's needs.  JumpStart students will work one-on-one with tutors or in a small group setting, 1 – 3 hours per day, 3 – 5 days per week.  JumpStart is designed to give your child a tremendous boost of confidence when they enter their new grade in September.

Customized Tutoring

We offer individualized programs based on your child's learning style and needs. We have qualified and experienced teachers who will work with you and your child to create customized interventions specifically tailored for your child’s needs.
