Why take the ACT in addition to the SAT? The best answer is: Why wouldn't you? The ACT is equally accepted as the SAT at ALL colleges and universities in the United States. Additionally, the ACT plus writing option is accepted by many schools in lieu of the SAT plus subject tests. Finally, if your child is not pleased with his or her results on the test, you simply don't submit it and no one is the wiser.
There have been a number of studies that have looked in to the characteristics of a student who systematically does better on the ACT or SAT, but the evidence of any statistically significant variation is just not there.
Anecdotally, over the past year, we have seen what we would have expected from our male students with no definable bias as to out performance on one test or the other. Our female students, likewise, have out-performed on both tests, though the level of outperformance on the ACT has sometimes been striking.
Similar to our SAT materials, we have an extensive library of real ACT tests that we draw upon to help our students become familiar with the test's question style and format.
